So - what do you want to be when you grow up?

I don't know about you, but I absolutely HATED that question as a kid!

Here I was working my butt off everyday in school, doing ALL THE THINGS to get into a great college - like getting all A's, playing 3 instruments, multiple sports and working on the weekends and in the summer - all to secure that promise of a successful career and life... IF I could keep up with it all...

So it seemed like almost a cruel question (even though I know people meant well), because honestly - when was I going to find the TIME or headspace to truly ponder what I wanted to do?! I was too busy doing what everyone told me I had to do that I got lost in mastering the tasks and never found my purpose.

I was also always jealous of the kids (and adults) who seemed to know for sure what they were meant to do with their lives, so I just consigned myself to the belief that some people are lucky enough to know and everyone else has to just try things to figure it out.

I think BOTH are true, but the reality is that most people (like me) get consumed with life and there never ends up being a time when you can pause and reconsider how you're spending your time. It starts to feel like an unattainable goal, or luxury, to be able to combine making a living while living a life you love.

To make matters worse, I ended up wearing the golden handcuffs in jobs I hated for 20 years because:

a) the corporate cultures absolutely suck in most companies, and

b) I became consumed by the torment of feeling out of step with my purpose BUT still not knowing WHAT IT WAS!!!

It was terrible, and now I had bills to pay and a family to support. Needless to say I've taken a totally different approach in raising my kids, but that's a topic for a separate post.

I found that my personal passion is designing and building Passive Homes with my husband. I've always been interested in it, but I finally took the time to educate myself on the building science and develop my skills further into architectural design.

At this point you might be thinking - well that's great for you Melody - why am I wasting my time reading your diary???

Well - along the way I also educated myself on...

with multiple income streams because:

a) the building industry doesn't generate consistent income and we're constrained by a local market (plus many other things), and

b) the economy hasn't been great and everything is just getting more and more expensive, so...

in order to keep up with rising costs and make THAT career work I had to figure out how to monetize it online as well.

As I learned how to build an online business I discovered another passion (lucky me - and you!), and that's THIS!

from the drone of just surviving life, to finding purpose and thriving in life!

I want to help YOU in any way that I can because I think the world will be a much better place if more and more people find fulfillment in what they're doing because they're harnessing their God given skills and graciously serving others with their talents.
